Cost Comparison between Poplar Deep-planting Techniques and the Traditional Techniques

  • The use of the deep-planting techniques for poplars is the major achievements of the project on the afforestation techniques in the Korqin sandy lands. "Mechanised Auger Planter (MAP)" and "Medium Depth Planter (MDP)" are the methods developed by the project to increase survival rate for the clonal selection programme and to suit for large-scale tree planting and plantation establishment. The study tries to prove that these two new techniques are economically feasible by means of the cost comparison between poplar deep-planting techniques and the traditional techniques. The conclusions are as follows. Firstly, the afforestation cost of MOP is lowest (0.13 yuan RMB per stem), the cost of MAP is listed in the second place (0.53-0.56 yuan RMB per stem), and the cost of traditional planting style is highest (0.71 yuan RMB per seedling). Secondly, the MOP and MAP have a high economic efficiency, a high survival rate of afforestation and a very good resistance to drought. Thirdly, because the MDP and MAP don not need soil preparation, the vegetation in sandy land has been kept fairly good. It shows that the MDP and MAP are superior to the traditional planting style. Therefore, these two kinds of deep-planting techniques should be spread all-sidedly.
